A Beginner’s Guide to FPV
Welcome to the world of FPV multirotors. It can feel intimidating when you are starting out, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges. This guide gives you the knowledge base to begin.
What is FPV?
FPV, or First Person View, is a uniquely immersive way to interact with an aircraft. A camera mounted on the drone sends live video to your goggles, transferring your point of view into a fast, agile flying machine.
Freestyle Flying
Freestyle is all about your environment, your multirotor, and the interaction between the two. It is a form of expression in flight focused on acrobatics, exploring spaces, and learning precise control.
FPV Racing
FPV racing means flying through gates and obstacles, solo or with a group of pilots. The goal is to find the fastest line while maintaining exact control through every part of the course.
Aerial Photography
Aerial photography lets you explore and record the world from a new perspective. It is useful for filmmaking, real estate, mapping, and simply seeing familiar places in a completely different way.
How a Multirotor Works
A multirotor has four control points: roll, pitch, yaw, and thrust. Each works independently and in combination to create complex movement. Learning how those controls interact is the foundation of confident flight.
Components of a Multirotor
FPV multirotors have three main groups of components: the flight system, the power system, and the FPV system. The flight system includes motors, propellers, ESCs, the flight controller, and radio receiver. The power system consists of the battery and distribution hardware. The FPV system contains the camera, video transmitter, receiver, and antenna.
To build or not to build?
Pre-built aircraft get you flying quickly, but building your first quad teaches you how every part works together—and how to repair it after the crashes that are an unavoidable part of learning.
Where to go next
Start with a simulator, learn battery safety, choose a durable first frame, and connect with local pilots. Do not let your quest for knowledge stop here; there is an entire FPV world to explore.
